Beautiful Mařenka’s marriage plans are threatened by the machinations of competing suitors and a scheming marriage broker.This celebration of life in a small, rustic community bristles with energy driven by rousing choruses, colourful characters and the irresistible pulse of the popular East European songs and dances on which Smetana based his music. Amidst such exuberant merry-making, a happy ending is never really in doubt!
Guildford audiences can enjoy this wonderfully uplifting show in Mark Herman and Ronnie Apter’s contemporary English translation, which plays to the distinctive Czech language whilst emphasising the rustic humour and concerns of village life. The production is fully staged with an orchestra, chorus and a fine cast of soloists.
Directors Lewis Gaston and Kevin John will give a free talk in the auditorium at 6.30 pm before Friday’s performance
