Malvern Festival of Ideas is a multidisciplinary festival of ideas that takes place in Malvern, Worcestershire. It is a themed weekend of ta

With our wealth of art, science, literature and history, what is the world we imagine? What is the future of democracy, the Union, the health and education services and the environment? Can we imagine a world where we act for the benefits of the earth’s communities? What steps should we be taking? These are just some of the questions we hope to address. Themed sessions explore the topic from some of these perspectives and the accompanying discussions and activities will allow participants to follow up their own interests within the overall theme.

The weekend will be opened by Asad Rehman, Executive Director of the anti-poverty and social justice organisation War on Want who will explore the idea of turning this moment of multiple crises into justice and what that actually entails. Other speakers are ecological economist, writer and playwright Tim Jackson who will explore ideas around alternative futures with Former minister for environment, sustainability and housing in the Welsh Government Jane Davidson in a session led by Liz Zeidler, Founding Director at Centre for Thriving Places. Former Attorney General Dominic Grieve asks Can we be better governed? Will Hutton and Steve Richards will discuss The State We’re In; and philosopher and author Raoul Martinez asks can we create a society that exists in harmony with the natural world?
Best-selling English author Onjali Raúf asks us to imagine a world in which we never lost our childhood's sense of justice; author Nathan Waddell reflects on Orwell’s legacy; and in The Poetry and Music of Science Tom McLeish takes a journey through the creative process in the arts as well as sciences. These talks take place at Malvern St James School. There will be opportunities during the weekend for participants to explore some of the ideas raised in workshops led by the social imagination project, Canopy

There is also family activity day at Malvern Cube involving science presenters Tom Crawford on Million-dollar Maths and wildlife presenter Lucy Eckersley on what happens when we start to mess with the natural world. Bernadette Russell presents her show 366 Days of Kindness - part stand up, part storytelling, in which she charts the amazing year 2020, which began with burning buildings, and ended with the flame of the Olympic torch. It attempts to answer the question: “is it possible to change the world just by being kind?”. Malvern Green Space ask us to image a better world offer a mini "pop-up Green Space" with a small swap shop, eco-bricking workshops, seed swap and permaculture display. PLUS a making station for kids to make pieces to contribute to a collaborative collage.

There are three classes of ticket - Standard, Patron and Discount. Choose the one that suits you best. Tickets are available for individual sessions as well as a weekend ticket that gives admission to all sessions.
