About the acts

Adam Hess

Starting his stand-up career in 2011, Adam showed himself to be one of the most exciting new acts in the country, winning the Chortle Student Comedy Award and taking a runner-up place in Leicester Square Theatre New Act of the Year award that same year. This year he was Fosters Edinburgh Comedy Awards – Best Newcomer nominee. He recently supported David Baddiel on his Fame Not The Musical Tour.

A prolific writer; Adam has also become widely known for his unique brand of comedy on Twitter and in the last two years has accrued tens of thousands of followers from the jokes he posts there alone. The BBC even filmed a selection of his tweets as sketches starring him as one of their Feed My Funny videos. He was a staff writer on the latest series of Russell Howard’s Good News for BBC 2 and has also written for tv regulars such as Chris Ramsey and Seann Walsh.

In 2013 a tweet by Adam was voted funniest of the year by The Telegraph.

Glenn Moore

Within his first 10 gigs, Glenn was a finalist in So You Think You’re Funny? and a runner-up in the Chortle Student Comedy Awards. Since then, he's gone on to regularly perform across the UK, for the likes of Jongleurs, Off The Kerb and Komedia. At the 2014 Edinburgh Fringe, he was part of the prestigious AAA Stand-Up Late showcase show.

Glenn is also one half of the critically-acclaimed sketch comedy duo Thunderbards, who had a sell-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2014, as well as a show at the Fringe the previous year voted one of GQ's 'Top Ten Funniest Shows at the Fringe'.

Outside of comedy, Glenn is a newsreader for radio stations across the country, including Capital FM, Classic FM, XFM, Heart, Smooth, Sky News Radio and LBC.

"Great one-liners, with silly turns of phrase that really shine" Steve Bennett, Chortle

Tommy Rowson

Tommy started performing stand up late in 2010. Six months later he was a finalist in the 2011 Laughing Horse New Act competition and he won So You Think You're Funny? later that year. In 2012 he performed as part of the AAA late night show at the Edinburgh Fringe and was a finalist in BBC Radio 2's New Comedy Award.

Tommy wrote, directed and acted in the award-winning short film Arrowman Sam, for which he was Cinemagic's Young Filmmaker of the Year and was shortlisted for Broadcast Young Talent's Young Writer of the Year award. Since then he has written for Baby Cow Productions, World Productions, and BBC Comedy. He also won the BAFTA Rocliffe Comedy Showcase 2014.

"A distinctive voice. This Welsh weirdo creates a quirky, oddball world - but one with which the rest of us can still easily identify. The anecdotes are full of detailed aside and delivery with perfectly-judged timing"

Steve Bennett (Chortle)

Gareth Richards

Gareth Richards’ hilarious stand-up, silly jokes and gorgeously low-key comedy songs have made him an instant favourite on the comedy circuit. In 2010 he was nominated for Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Award Best Newcomer. Gareth has appeared on Russell Howard’s Good News, Live at the Electric (BBC3) and live on Radio 1. Gareth co-hosted Frank Skinner’s Sony award-winning Absolute Radio show for two years and supported Frank on his 2014 tour

‘A delightful hour of comedy’ (Guardian)

‘A quietly-clever craftsman with a big future’ (Bruce Dessau, Evening Standard)

Kieran Boyd

Semi-finalist in So You Think You’re Funny? (2009), Amused Moose Laugh-Off (2010), and part of Fringe favourites WitTank, Kieran has been performing his inventive, high-energy stand up across the country for five years. “Impressively sharp. Expect big things”
Sunday Times

Julian Deane

Having first performed stand up in 2005, Julian’s brilliant, utterly original and hilarious routines have earned him appreciation, recognition and praise from audiences across the country as well as prominent figures in the comedy industry.

Furthermore, he has proved his talent by winning some of the most prestigious stand-up comedy competitions in the country and is also in big demand as a writer (Mock the Week, Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Morgan Spurlock’s New Britannia) All of this makes him a terrific act with a hugely exciting future ahead of him.

“deliciously twisted… a stream of seriously good gags… quick, sharply written and endlessly repeatable lines” The Guardian

Iain Stirling

A well-known face on television, Iain most recently became the voice of Love Island (ITV2) alongside presenter Caroline Flack adding to a list of multiple credits including: performing on Russell Howard’s Good News (BBC Three), Russell Howard’s Stand Up Central and Drunk History (Comedy Central), as well as hosting his own Scottish BAFTA winning (best children’s programme) panel show The Dog Ate My Homework (CBBC), joining the panel on Fake Reaction and Safe Word (ITV2) and Sweat the Small Stuff (BBC Three). A regular voice on the radio too, Iain has made appearances on shows including The Now Show, Dilemma (Radio 4), The Josh Widdicombe Show (XFM) and recorded a Radio One takeover.

“it’s just a matter of time before Julian Deane gets a boost up the comedy rankings… His trick is to make you think you’re watching standard stand-up fare, then twisting expectations with sharp, original punchlines” The Independent

Steve Bugeja

Steve Bugeja was crowned the 2013 BBC Radio New Comedy Award winner and was a finalist in the Amused Moose and Laughing Horse new act competitions, making him one of the stand-out new acts of the past few years. Steve supported Russell Kane on his national tour ‘Smallness’ and he continues to gig at comedy clubs across the country.

In October 2013 Steve was picked for Radio 4’s ‘Fresh From The Fringe’, and featured on the BBC Red button following a successful Edinburgh festival where he took part in the prestigious package show The Lunchtime Special as well as his own 35 minute free fringe show.

A prolific writer, Steve has contributed material for Mock The Week, 8 out of 10 Cats and Russell Howard’s Good News.

‘Bugeja has an eye for original comic detail that's all his own.’ The Guardian

Matt Winning

Winner of the Hilarity Bites New Act of the Year 2011, Matt Winning is one of the most exciting, unique and imaginative new stand-up and character comedians in the UK.

The Scottish comic's eccentric and idiosyncratic act is a whirlwind of ideas, combining an original approach to one-liners, acute observations and shouting loudly. Matt was a finalist in the BBC New Comedy Awards 2012. He was also finalist in the Chortle Student Comedy Awards in 2010 as himself and again in 2011 as the character Steph E Graph.

Matt is a co-creator of the Bearpit Podcast Podcast which is a "Cultish" ( The Independent) character-improv show with a monthly residency at the Invisible Dot in London. He has appeared on BBC3 Comedy Marathon, Hardeep at the Stand (BBC Scotland) and regularly performs on live shows for The Stand, CKP, Hilarity Bites and Avalon’s Comedy Network as well as performing sketches and characters at cult evening The Stockholm Syndrome in Glasgow.

"Fine and distinctive one-liners in his set, with strange points of reference and clever exposition......an inventive writer”
Steve Bennett, Chortle

Annie Mcgrath

Annie McGrath is a comedy writer and performer who made her debut character comedy and stand-up solo performance in Edinburgh in 2015. She has been shortlisted for the Funny Women comedy writing award and was a two-time finalist for the Tickled Pig stand-up competition. She has performed at clubs nationwide and throughout London as well as at a number of festivals.

Annie also writes and performs as one half of the double-act Twins with Jack Barry. The Twins' latest Edinburgh show, Pret a Comedy, was produced in association with Hat Trick Productions. It has been described as “ridiculously funny...and genuinely impressive” (Edinburgh Reporter - ****), and was also selected as one of James Acaster’s Top Picks of the Fringe 2015 for The Guardian.

"A unique & exciting prospect...genuinely brilliant" – **** What’s On London

Jack Barry

Jack is probably the only stand up on the circuit with a degree in Chinese. What a waste. After excitedly stumbling his way around the stand up and sketch circuits, performing at nights for CKP, Knock 2 Bag, the Invisible Dot and the BBC Comedy Tent in Edinburgh, Jack then went on to support James Acaster on the UK tours of Edinburgh Award-nominated shows Prompt and Lawnmower.

In 2014 Jack performed in the prestigious Comedy Zone as well as performing on the Free Fringe as one half of sketch duo Twins. Jack had previously performed as part of the Pleasance Comedy Reserve and in double-header Your New Mild Friends. Jack first appeared at the Festival as part of critically acclaimed student sketch group Leeds Tealights named Best Student Sketch Group in 2010.

“An inventive flourish behind his likeable banter… a distinctive wit that should make him one to watch” Steve Bennett, Chortle

Alex Smith

Alex’s trademark mix of laser sharp stand-up observations and cleverly crafted comedy songs have helped him rapidly emerge as one the most exciting new acts on the circuit. In just two years he has appeared on BBC Radio 2’s New Comedy Awards and secured two guest slots on BBC3’s prestigious talent showcase, Live At The Electric hosted by Russell Kane, whom he supported during his 'Smallness' tour.

He was runner up in The Amused Moose 2013 Laugh Off competition and appeared as part of The Comedy Zone at Edinburgh 2014. He was also a finalist at the Montreux Comedy Festival in Switzerland.

Ahir Shah

In August 2015, Ahir debuted his new show, Distant, at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe which saw huge critical success and packed houses, and will now play the Soho Theatre for a week in October. A show about the importance of faraway things, Ahir turns his incisive brand of comedy to topics spanning World War One, cigarettes, vegetarianism, Islamism, capitalism, politics, climate change, love, and pirates.

Outside of stand-up, Ahir is currently writing a sitcom pilot for Channel 4 titled Strange Land, about immigration in 1960s London. He has also been a contributing writer on Skins (Channel 4), The News Quiz (BBC Radio 4) and Newsjack (BBC Radio 4 Extra). His television credits include Brotherhood (Comedy Central), The Midnight Beast (E4), Live At The Electric (BBC Three) and Campus and The Seven Ages of Love (both Channel 4).

“Excellent…A questing argument against compassion fatigue and a generational cri de coeur” ★★★★ The Guardian

Steve Hall

Steve Hall is a stand-up comedian and writer. In 2014 he supported Russell Howard on his sell-out national tour Wonderbox having supported Russell on previous tours Adventures, Dingledodies and Big Rooms And Belly Laughs. Steve also provided support for Dave Gorman’s Screen Guild Tour.

As a writer, Steve has written on the last 4 series of Russell Howard’s Good News as well two series for BBC Radio 4’s The Now Show. Steve has also written for Russell Howard’s new stand up show for Comedy Central. “This is stand-up as it should be: snappy and smart, occasionally nasty, and always funny” The List
