Cajun and Zydeco at The John Selden
The very best in Cajun and Zydeco music & food
Rough Chowder the best exponents of the genre in the South.
Ian McIlroy – Accordion / Vocals
From the tender age of nine Ian has been vamping the squeezebox across a spectrum of traditional folk music, from his roots playing for local Morris sides, with an occasional hanky in hand and rosetted nipples, Ian has developed an eclectic music range from playing ceilidh and traditional Irish to melodeon based heavy rock. Ian’s musical curiosity has now taken him across the Atlantic where he has discovered the swamp music of southern Louisiana and his passion for playing Cajun and Zydeco has flourished and ultimately become Rough Chowder.
Strewn along the wayside of his musical career, Ian is not ashamed to admit that he has borrowed the best bits from a wide array of influences, Nick Cave, Gram Parsons, Tom Paxton, Corey Ledet, Feufollet, Mama Rosin, Cedric Watson, Steve Reilly, Roger Watson……to name but a few.
Cheryl McIlroy – Frottoir / Titfer / Vocals
After several years of watching Ian from the wings, Miss Kitty grabbed the bull by the horns, or the washboard by the shoulder straps, and homed her own southern style beat and scrape.
After relocating from the West Country, this once shy cat has once again discovered her passion for singing and embraced the Cajun and Zydeco tradition together with her own special twist of rock n roll and lounge.
Andrew Craggs – Guitar
Having migrated south from Newcastle a year ago Andrew is no stranger to folk scene coming from a musical family and performing Americana and folk for the last 20 years. Andrew is certainly our angel from the north (see what we did there!) and we’re glad to have him aboard.
Yes, folks! There will music, there will be a mighty rad gumbo! Come on and join us for the very best of everything
