Craig Charles' Seaside Christmas Party
Craig Charles (BBC 6 Music) The Soulsteppers (10 piece funk band) Boca 45 Jalapeno Sound System Sir Funk and very special guestsWe bet you’ve heard the a similar tale, but not this one. This is the tale of a BBC Radio 6 DJ by the name of Mr Craig Charles, known far and wide across the land for his thriving Funk and Soul Show. He went to sleep one night and was visited by a wild dream, a dream taking place in the adorable seaside haven known to all as Brighton. The dream told him that by the strike of three bells he would be visited by a variety of ghosts and that his destiny was to put on a very big party on the 10th December, which embodied Christmas’ past, present, and Christmas’ yet to come…
At the strike of the first bell (which was in fact not a bell but rather a deafening trombone blast) he was taken aback by the 10 sassy figures at the end of his bed, armed with brass instruments, congos and guitars. “Craig Charles” a sweet soulful voice said. “We are the Soul Steppers and we are representing the sounds of the past. We let the good living get their groove on to the songs of the 60’s and 70’s and we have a damned good time while we’re doing it. Many call us one of the most bonafide acts in the UK - book us and we will come.” Craig awoke, made some notes and put his head down again, looking forward to the next act on his line-up revealing themselves.
At the second bell, which was in fact not a bell at all but the screech of a 7” vinyl, Craig was greeted by a man who looked familiar. “Malakai?” Craig asked. “No” said the figure. “I am Boca 45, one half of the duo you know as Malakai. I can tell you have heard of us, perhaps that’s because Zane Lowe named us “hottest record in the world” one day. Well as you know my duty is to focus on the present, and for this I will explore the recent resurgence of vinyl. Let me come to your party and teach the kids about good music. Let them here my sumptuous samples of Funk, Soul, Psych and Hip Hop jumps…
