Open Evening

The Observatory Science Centre, Hailsham, Sussex, BN271RN

Open Evening: Sat 3rd March - Open Evening - Total Lunar Eclipse

Are you interested in the night sky? Have you ever wondered what it would be like to look at the stars, planets and the moon through some of the countrys largest telescopes? Well here is your opportunity! Come and join us on our open evenings and take a glimpse of what it would have been like to use these amazing instruments.

This fantastic sight occurs when the Earth passes directly between the Sun and the Moon, blocking out the light from the Sun.

Lunar Eclipse - An eclipse of the moon can only occur at FULL MOON and only if the Moon passes through some portion of the Earths shadow (click here to see a diagram of the phases of the moon under First Quarter, diagram 2). On 3rd March the moon will rise at 5.20pm (17:20) as the sun is setting.

A total eclipse happens when the entire moon passes through Earths umbral shadow (see diagram below).
