Dudley Castle West Midlands Overnight Ghost Hunt: Dudley Castle stands on top overlooking the town of Dudley. Its ruins still tell a story of battles won and lost and has a very colourful past.
History
Dudley Castle was built in 1071 by the Normans, originally a wooden castle and by the 13th century the castle was rebuilt from stone. The first mention of a castle at Dudley comes with the arrival of 'a great and powerful prince of the Kingdom of Mercia' called Dudd, Dodo or Dudo circa 700 A.D. 'who raised a strong fortress here, which remained until the Conquest.'The Castle has has many owners some of the most famous are the Somery Family who wanted fortification but was not granted it by King Henry VI until Roger Somery (2nd) fought for the King against the Barons and won the King' trust and a licence to crenelate. The Sutton Family was too also owners and took on Dudley as an additional surname. In the early 1500's John Dudley was a conniving man, he was keen to have the castle for himself. Henry VIII had willed that Lady Jane Grey future sons were next in
succession after his own children, Edward, Mary, and Elizabeth. Edward had always been a sickly child, not least because he inherited syphilis from his father. Northumberland foresaw that the boy King would soon die and had his own son Guildford Dudley married to Lady Jane Grey against her will at the age of 15 on 21st May 1553 in a bid to secure the succession for his own family. Three days after Edward's death, on July 9th that year, she was informed that the late king had declared his sisters Mary and Elizabeth illegitimate and named her as his successor. By the 19th, however, Mary Tudor had her in the Tower of London. In due course Northumberland
thus went to the axe for treason, taking an innocent Lady Jane Grey with him, and her own less innocent father as well (Lady Jane might have survived but for her father's misdeeds and her own unremitting Protestantism in the face of Mary's determination to re-establish Catholicism in England). The castle was forfeited to Mary Tudor, but Edward Dudley, son of the usurped and just-deceased John Lord Dudley earned sufficient favour with Mary to have the castle restored to his family.
Another story is that of a drummer boy, killed by a single shot and has been known to have been sensed.
Paranormal Activity
There is a inn called the Grey Lady Tavern which has been named after Lady Jane Grey who has been reported to have been sighted here.
There is a ominous black monk who has been seen in various parts of the castle. Noises, poltergeist activity, shadows and experiences of
being touched have also been noted. When our Prestige Paranormal team was in the Lady Grey Tavern Lavatory's to hear someone talking in a cubicle, only to realise she was alone and no-one had come in or out.
We also heard children's voices in the under-croft, and got a famous King in the Zodiac room via the glass. In that same moment we also saw his shadow on two occasions, stone throwing on command and heavy sighing in our ears. In the kitchen area our medium picked up on a friendly cavalier who liked to watch and observe and the fact it used to be a stable, which was confirmed by staff. And shadows was seen on the second floor. The cottage nearby on the way up has feelings of foreboding, particularly because a murder took place there when a disgruntled father was displeased with his daughters pregnancy when she fell in love with a local boy in Dudley.
