The Commandery

The Commandery, Worcester, Worcestershire, WR12HU

The Commandery: We know very little about the early history of the Commandery. Tradition has it that the building was founded as a hospital around 1085 by Saint Wulfstan, then Bishop of Worcester.

Today, the Commandery still adapts itself to the needs of the age whilst retaining the fabric of its history for future generations. Above all the building is one that is held in great affection by the people of Worcester and all those who have come into contact with it.

2005 is an exciting year for the Commandery. From January to June the museum and its three main exhibitions will be open as normal. From mid February these will be supplemented with a new childrens activity area exploring the six most important periods of the Commanderys history.

The Battle of Worcester 1651 and the English Civil War exhibition in the Canal Wing offers the visitor an opportunity to step back in time to the turbulent years of Englands bloody revolution. Life sized models and dioramas of key events bring these unsettled years in British history, dramatically to life.

The exhibition examines the causes and the politics behind the War and looks at the key events and battles from Edgehill to Worcester.
