James Baillieu (piano) & The Heath String Quartet Theatre & Performing Arts

The Northern Aldborough Festival brings together two award winning performers in a programme of Beethoven & Shostakovich

The programme includes Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet and Beethoven’s String Quartet Op. 59 No. 1.

'James Baillieu is in a class of his own, he is in the Gerald Moore/Graham Johnson bracket, a remarkable pianist.’
The Telegraph

'…prodigiously gifted pianist. James Baillieu is surely the leader of the new generation of accompanists.’
Classical Source

Described by The Daily Telegraph as ‘in a class of his own’ South African pianist James Baillieu has given solo and chamber recitals throughout Europe and further afield. He collaborates with a wide range of singers and instrumentalists from Lawrence Power, Jack Liebeck, the Elias and Heath Quartets to Sir Thomas Allen, Kiri te Kanawa, Ian Bostridge and Mark Padmore. Festivals and venues have included Wigmore Hall, Berlin Konzerthaus, Musikverein, Bridgewater Hall, Aldeburgh, Cheltenham, Bath, City of London and Aix-en-Provence Festivals. In the 2015/16 season James has his own 11-concert series at Wigmore Hall “Introducing James Baillieu”.

'The fast-rising Heath Quartet climbed the...peaks with...brilliance. An evening that blazed with feeling, passion and virtuosity.'
The Telegraph

'...the music's potency and bravura were conveyed with thrilling conviction.'
The Guardian

The dynamic and charismatic Heath Quartet are fast earning a reputation as one of the most exciting British chamber ensembles of the moment and in 2016 won the prestigious Gramophone Award for Chamber Music for their debut recording. In May 2013, they became the first ensemble in 15 years to win the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society’s Young Artists Award. Formed in 2002 at the Royal Northern College of Music they were selected for representation by YCAT and were awarded a Borletti-Buitoni Special Ensemble Scholarship. Notable recent performances have included a complete Beethoven Cycle at the Kilkenny Arts Festival, the world premiere of a John Tavener piece at the BBC Proms, concerts at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Berlin Konzerthaus, the Musikverein in Vienna, the Barbican, Bridgewater Hall and debuts in New York at both Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln Centre.
