RHS Garden Harlow Carr: Harlow Carr is the newest and most northerly of the four RHS gardens. This, along with its challenging growing conditions, offers an ideal place to view what can be grown successfully in the region.
Over the last 12 months, the garden has seen many exciting developments while retaining its uniquely tranquil and welcoming atmosphere. Probably the most spectacular are the Gardens through Time - seven fascinating historical gardens offering a unique living encyclopaedia of 200 years of gardening history. Dramatic new mixed borders edge the path to Gardens' through Time and their use of mixed perennials, grasses and roses beautifully combine sustainable practice and inspirational horticulture with a contemporary twist.
The garden offers interest for all seasons - from herbaceous to wildflowers, alpines to woodland - and now the fabulous Bettys Cafe and Shop offering delicious food and the best teas and coffees, it really is growing to inspire.
The garden is the most northerly of the RHS gardens and this along with its challenging growing conditions makes it an ideal place to view what can be grown in the north. The garden is in an area called Harlow; 'Carr' (or Car as was previously used) is a middle English word, derived from Norse, meaning land reclaimed from bog.
Exciting plant ranges are featured in the Plant Centre, many of them carrying the RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM) with the plants reflecting the growing diversity of planting in the garden. Herbaceous perennials, shrubs, alpines, herbs, bedding plants, seeds and houseplants are all available.
All hardy plants come with a two-year guarantee, and expert advice is on hand from friendly and knowledgeable staff. .
