Come face to face with the teeth of a giant megalodon and the jaw of a pterosaur, admire precious pieces of opal and gold
Mines, Minerals and Monsters Exhibition
Take a look at some of the best items in the museum’s geology collection. You can add some sparkle to your day in ‘Marvellous Minerals’, which includes a display of blue john, malachite, precious opal and gold. Explore ‘Life in the Carboniferous’ to find out what made this period, approximately 300 million years ago, so unique and see some fish and plant remains including a rhizodus jaw, megalichthys fins, as well as lepidodendron, stigmaria and calamites specimens. See animal remains including a plesiosaur tail, part of a pterosaur jaw, teeth from the gigantic megalodon, and teeth and vertebrae from an ichthyosaur in the ‘What are Fossils?’ section.

The exhibition has been made possible thanks to a partnership between Leeds Museums and Galleries’ Geoblitz Project and Kirklees Museums and Galleries which has highlighted hidden treasures Kirklees Museums and Galleries have in their stores. The project is funded by the John Ellerman Foundation and Arts Council England.
