Ghost Hunt At Bolton Castle **friday 13th Event**: FRIDAY 13th SPECIAL!

GHOST HUNT AT BOLTON CASTLE, NORTH YORKSHIRE

OUR FIRST EVER INVESTIGATION AT THIS LOCATION!

History of Bolton Castle

Located in the heart of Wensleydale, inside the Yorkshire Dales National Park (not in Bolton, Greater Manchester!), Bolton Castle is a spectacular and wonderfully preserved medieval fortress. Built by Sir Richard Le Scope, Lord Chancellor of England to Rickard II, it was completed in 1399 and has borne witness to over 600 years of history, including Mary, Queen of Scots' imprisonment within its walls and its besiegement by Parliament during the Civil War.

Bolton Castle has never been sold and is privately owned today by Lord Bolton, a direct descendent of Sir Richard Le Scope.

Ghosts of Bolton Castle

Although there have long been tales of paranormal activity at Bolton Castle, it is only in the past couple of years that groups have started carrying out investigations. The wealth of phenomena encountered by these groups has led to a sharp rise in the notoriety of Bolton Castle as a very haunted building.

Perhaps it should be expected, given the fact that she was imprisoned at the castle for six months during 1568 and 1569, that the frequently seen ghost of a lady in a dark cloak has often been attributed to Mary, Queen of Scots. This is likely to be nothing more than wishful thinking, especially when taking into consideration the number of other castles and manor houses she supposedly haunts! However, many people, including the current Lord Bolton, have seen this apparition - whoever she may be.

On the first occasion, Lord Bolton was locking up at around 5:30pm when he noticed a lady in what he thought was a dark coat walk into the East Curtain. Assuming it was a late visitor, he waited outside for her to finish her tour. When she still hadn't appeared after several minutes, he ventured inside to see what she was doing. There was no-one there! Furthermore, there is only one entrance/exit in that part of the castle - there is no way the lady could have left without Lord Bolton seeing her. A few years later, exactly the same thing happened, this time in the chapel. A lady who lives in the village believes she has seen the same ghostly lady roaming around outside the castle and is able to describe her in more detail as wearing a blouse with a lace collar and a dark cloak.

In Mary, Queen of Scots' bed chamber is a four poster bed which Lord Bolton picked up from the Isle of Man due to its reputation of giving those sleeping in it vivid nightmares and hallucinations. The story goes that it had been unsuccessfully exorcised on two occasions. It was reassembled in the bed chamber and nothing more thought of it, until the day that Lord Bolton's dogs came to the castle and entered that room. Usually placid, friendly animals, they went berserk, barking and snarling at the bed!

A group of historical re-enactors frequently stay at the castle. One night they all heard a dramatic drum roll emanating from the courtyard. Knowing that there were a couple of children with them, and that there was a drum in the armoury, they assumed that the children had crept passed them and were messing around. However, upon checking, the children were fast asleep in the Great Chamber, there was no-one downstairs and the doors were shut and bolted from the inside. It was impossible that anyone could have entered the armoury without passing the re-enactors.

Join us at Bolton Castle as we investigate these strange tales and attempt to find out if this awe-inspiring location is as haunted as many believe.
