Five choirs, soloists and full orchestra will join together in music to celebrate the 950th anniversary of The Battle of Stamford Bridge.
On 16th October at 7.30 pm, the Stamford Bridge Singers will join forces with three other local choirs plus a choir from Norway to perform a unique concert to mark the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Stamford Bridge. The concert will take place at All Saints Church in Pocklington. Stamford Bridge Singers, Pocklington Singers, Chanticleer Singers, Soon Amore and Vilvin will each perform a short programme, then together they will perform ‘The Battle Cantata’, a new work by Choir Director, Stuart Nettleship, based on the poem ‘The Battle of Stamford Bridge’ by Laurence Binyon. This exciting cantata will be performed by eight-part choir, semi-chorus, four soloists and full orchestra. The four soloists will be: Katie Wood (soprano) Charlotte Phillips (contralto), Jason Darnell (tenor) and Christopher Thornton-Holmes (bass). The orchestra has been formed especially for the occasion from musicians from all round the region.Children from Stamford Bridge Primary School have been designing the concert poster in a competition judged by members of English Heritage. The winning entry, from Grace Morris, will feature on the posters and on the souvenir programme. A number of local businesses have kindly agreed to sponsor this special event to offset the costs involved. All proceeds from the concert will go to Jessie’s Fund, a UK charity helping children with additional and complex needs to communicate and express themselves through the use of music.
