Intimate afternoon concert featuring Treebeard & friends playing 'Heavy Wood' Celtic, folk & rock.
The band play lively Celtic folk-rock; traditional, original & contemporary songs & tunes on a variety of acoustic instruments, always guaranteed to get an audience up & dancing.
They describe their style as 'Heavy Wood', releasing a first CD of that name in 2002, and a second CD 'Reel Ale’ in 2010. Their track ‘Train’ is also featured on the ‘Forged in Sheffield’ folk compilation CD, and video for 'Over The Hills' has won the runner up prize in the 2 weeks 2 make it filmmaking competition 2011, as well as attracting over 190,000 youtube views.

We are currently working on tracks for a new CD and taking festival bookings for 2017.

Treebeard Reel Ale **** R2 (rock'n'reel)
“This second plank of seasoned 'heavy wood' music from Sheffield's Treebeard sees them once again hoisting their Campaign For Real Folk-Rock flag in that sun dappled English woodland glade forever populated by Mole, Ratty, Robin Hood, and Ian Anderson in a codpiece.
Indeed a relaxed lope through Tull's 'Dun Ringill' is one of the clutch of covers - other notables are Zep's 'Going to California' and Nigel Mazlyn Jones 'A Singularly Fine Day' that will offer clues to the band's sound for those yet to make their acquaintance. For the cognoscenti, though, it's the original material that stands out. Flautist Ceri Ashton's 'Ale Jug/Rice' is the pick of a fine bunch of instrumentals, though 'Three McMahon's' runs it close, with Chris McMahon's electric twin neck mandola excesses just one of the many reminders of three-fifths of the band's proggy alter-egos as Haze.
Of the songs, the supernatural ballad 'Highwayman's Hollow' is the one you'll find yourself humming for days afterwards... this is craft-brewed English folk-rock of the finest order. Drink irresponsibly.” Oz Hardwick
Treebeard – Reel Ale (Gabadon Records – 2010)
“Sheffield based band that delved well into the folky sounds and also incorporate some rock in their too at times. They wouldn’t be too out of place on Mike Hardings Radio 1 Folk Show at all.
I can see some peeps being baffled by some of it like songs such as ‘Dun Ringill’ or a folk version of Coldplay’s ‘Driftwood’ but these guys are so good that they make you wanna listen. Other highlights include the excellent ‘Believe’ and their version of ‘Free Electric Band’ that’s dedicated to Sass of the late great Classic Rock Bar and other awesome drinking pools in Sheffield.
Then there’s the psychedical folky jig that is 'Chris World/Around The World For Sport’; a cool cover of Motorhead's 'Ace Of Spades' and an amazing ‘Going to California’ by Led Zeppelin and that ‘Russian Medley’ is awesome too. Damn fine musicians that need to be checked out at a festival or at your local drinking parlour.

“Then it was time for Treebeard – guitar, bass, cajón AND bodhran and piccolo/whistles/ flute made for more folky inspired stuff. I was a bit fixated on the cajón as a fledgling player – a wider than normal one with a sloped playing surface, and a strangely familiar looking player. I think that’s because it’s Joel from Blackthorn’s brother, James! He was very very good though! They kicked off with Matty Groves and then lots of other songs I’m afraid I don’t know the names of. Sounded great though.
Probably the peak of the excitement though was when a gigantic triangular three-stringed instrument was brought out (along with a Russian hat!) – I’ve since discovered it is called a balalaika. Its smaller brother was wielded by another band member – basically we were taken on a bit of a world tour of folk from different regions, really engaging set. Looking forward to getting a chance to spend a bit more time getting to know Treebeard’s music.” (Ferocious Blog, Black Market, Warsop)
“The set was a clever blend of originals & cover material, made all the more enjoyable by the friendly and fun loving attitude on stage.” John Drinkall (Fishponds, Matlock Bath)
“A superb accompaniment with beer“ Newark CAMRA (Newark Beer Festival)
“...These guys are such good entertainers: the five piece play a set of cover versions of songs, from the last twenty years or so, on a huge variety of instruments ... excellent fun.” New Horizons (Whitchurch Festival)
“...a brilliantly executed set, with terrific audience interaction all the way through. These guys are all skilful musicians and what's more they really know how to entertain a crowd.” New Horizons (Whitchurch Festival)
“a skilful mixture of traditional and modern that works incredibly well and seems to have a secret ingredient for helping the beer go down...it was all a lot of fun, a real musical treat - so make a note to see them if you can. Highly recommended. Hilary Drysdale” (Golden Fleece, Nottingham)
“They were very lively and very fun to watch and to listen to. They played a lovely Russian song with crazy, huge, triangular stringed instruments and a Russian hat. Yes, one of the band wore a Russian hat. The flautist added a definite “Clannad” style to the songs, and they even had a guest bearded tree-stump with them too. ” Hannah Vickers (St Michael’s Hall, Wombwell Festival)
“Above all, Treebeard are a fun band to watch. The great thing ... is that you never know what is coming next.” Stockport Beer Festival
