August 1st to the 4th sees The Port of Withernsea holding its inaugural pirate festival. Over four days the
organisers of the event have managed to beg borrow and steal a selection of events ranging from Sea shanty
groups to Galleons, Auctions to Hireing Fairs, Buskers to Beach Parties.
The event is not aimed at raising monies for charity but just for the residents and holiday makers to have a good time. However
charity has not been forgotten when on the first night of the festival at The Beggars Folk Club the long awaited CD of the Sea
Shanties will be launched and which funds from it will be going to R.N.L.I.,The Coast Guard and St Andrews Dock Heritage
The accent on the festival is to have fun and enjoy. There are Pirates coming from all points of the compass with names such as
Capt Jack Sparrow and Edward Teach to ensure true pirate royalty are attending.
The residents of Withernsea are involving themselves with the group which is now in excess of 850 members and are busy
sourcing the makings for their effigies to take part in The Pirate Scarecrow Trail.
Although the festival is over four days the main event takes place on Sunday the 4th with the celebrations taking place in
Withernseas' Valley Gardens. This coincides with The Fisheries Local Action Group seafood event also taking place there. The
stage at Valley gardens will be constantly kept busy with the likes of Colleens Fancy, The Cod Heads, The Ocean Loiners, Effie
Bassett-Scott and The Spare Hands to name but a few they will also be performing throughout the town at various busking areas.
Fun and games will be provided by The Earthbound misfits and students from a local international college.
Events throughout the festival include Auctions, Hireing fairs, Treasure hunts and beach parties.
It culminates with a concert by THE BLACK PEARLS with appearances from The Ruby Red Burlesque. This
has an entrance fee of andpound:3:00 the only chargeable event in the whole of the programme.
