Ukrainian pianist Lubomyr Melnyk returns as Balliol's guest for two concerts of his unique take on classical music
Lubomyr Melnyk returns to share his unique continuous music with Oxford, for two concerts in The New Space, New College, on February the 23rd and 24th (8pm) - once again as a guest of the Balliol College Musical SocietyLast November, we hosted him to thunderous applause across three concerts in three colleges, filling all venues, finding the general public and academics alike tearful and buying up his LPsThis time, he will be accompanied by the professional filmmaker Rupert Clague, who is working on a documentary about him under Werner Herzog and may be looking to interview, and we are collaborating with the research group Creative Empirical to investigate the flow states Lubomyr inhabits and induces in his typical audience; our audience is warmly encouraged to participate in a pilot study with them
Lubomyr Melnyk's 'continuous music' is rooted in the Western classical tradition but is heavily influenced by more Eastern philosophies and practices, in particular by the virtuosity of classical sitarHe creates very rich, multitextural yet delicate sounds, offering a fascinating and immersive experience that many listeners find deeply moving, that many even liken to a religious experienceThis unique new voice for the piano is in tribute to Lubomyr's beloveds - Beethoven and Bach - but is nevertheless groundbreaking, musically and technically, and cannot be professionally performed by anyone else in the world - making all of his concerts unmissable
