A pair of writing workshops exploring the dark side of folklore.
DARK FOLKLOREBefore a lively evening of folk music at Matlock Bath’s fabulous Grand Pavilion, join us for two writing workshops exploring folklore in its creative sense! Led by creative writing lecturer and tutor Alex Davis, these two sessions will examine different ways you can develop ideas and write in the area.
10AM-11:30AM
The Dark Side of Folk – Writing Folk Horror
Back to classics such as The Blood on Satan’s Claw and The Wicker Man through to modern hits like The Witch and Midsommar, Folk Horror has a long and enduring legacy. In this session, we’ll be defining the subgenre and looking examples of folk horror, serving up advice on how to write in the field and giving you a writing exercise to get your story started!
12PM-1:30PM
Frankenstein in Matlock Bath
In Mary Shelley’s seminal novel, Victor Frankenstein stops by Matlock Bath itself en route to Scotland – giving the town a connection to one of the greatest books ever written. In this session, we’ll look at why the Frankenstein story caught on and retains such popularity, explore some of its many retelling over the years and develop our own take on the classic tale!
