Join us in a 'Broom Day' celebration on Saturday 3rd May with a Walk from The Glades to Martin's Hill to see the wonderful Broom in flower.

Bromley Civic Society along with the Friends of Bromley Parks and Gardens are planning a 'Broom Day' celebration on Saturday 3rd May.

Bromley (formerly 'Broomleag') gets its name from the profusion of broom that flowered on Martin's Hill. The broom had all but disappeared by the 1980's but it has revived and in recent years there has been a spectacular display of yellow flowers across the hillside.

Bromley Civic Society are seeking to revive the Broom Day or Broomtime celebrations with an annual event.

There will be an Exhibition in the main display area on the ground floor of The Glades. Also a Walk to the Broom on Martin's Hill led by the Mayor who will be wearing his robes, hat and chain of office! We hope that many of the other walkers will be dressed up in assortments of green and yellow, decorated with sprigs of broom (or something yellow) wherever possible.

The Exhibition will consist of several very colourful panels giving information about the Broom in Bromley. There will be numerous pots of broom in flower, activities for children, and a 'bower' with a bench which doubles as a photo opportunity. The Exhibition will be coupled with a Heritage Display showing the history of Bromley through its architecture.

The Walk (or parade if there are enough people) will leave at 11:00am from the Glades out through the Elmfield Road entrance, up the High Street, through the Market Square, along Church Road and out to Martin's Hill. In the area near the War Memorial, there will be music, activities and speeches…and time to appreciate the glorious spectacle of the broom in flower.

We hope it will be an event that we can build on year by year.
