Gaze is a series of medium-specific workshops led by artist Jennifer Martin in partnership with workshop participants, to engage in collecti
The project seeks to find approaches to impeding inherently racialized sight. Organised as three workshops and public events that take place in different locations across London (August - October 2017), Gaze will query the site where epidermis, vision, and apparatus meet.During the initial workshop Film/Collage participants will interrogate a selection of POC actors’ career changes and potential agency in selecting roles and navigating outside of typecasting. During the collage exercise of the workshop, participants will approach images that exist inside and outside of the ‘Veil’ as theorised by W.E.B. Du Bois. The workshop provides an opportunity for participants to focus on POC representation, employing testimony, discussion, and creative work.
The Place is Here exhibition provides a crucial grounding context for Gaze and analysis of workshop participants’ collective probing and experiments with racialized representation through the mediums of film and collage. Works generated from this session will be presented during the public talk and discussion Gaze: Navigating the ‘Veil’ at the South London Gallery on Thursday 31 August 6.30 - 8.30pm.
Please note that workshop participation is for individuals that identify as a person of colour. Lunch will be provided for workshop participants during the hour lunch break. Early registration is recommended, as places are limited.
Gaze is supported by the Durham Wharf Foundation and ReachOutRCA. Filming will take place during the workshop.
