Architecture Photo Walk: Golden Lane and the Barbi Theatre & Performing Arts

Compare and contrast two great Corporation of London estates - Golden Lane and the Barbican - in this architecture walking tour led by profe

Designed by architects Chamberlin, Powell and Bon, these estates provided much needed housing in City of London locations that had been heavily bomb damaged during the war. Both connect to a Corbusian lineage of modernist architecture and, now listed, continue to be well-maintained exemplars from a period of utopian ideals for city living.

You will begin the day at RIBA’s HQ in London. Here we will contextualise the afternoon session as you will have the opportunity to look at some of the important reference points within the RIBA Library Collections. Items will include period photographs made at the completion of both estates as well as more recent books and journals that revisit and review the schemes.

Next, as a group, we head offsite to the Barbican for a guided tour around both the estates where you will be challenged to capture images of these two iconic locations. Led by a professional photographer who is familiar with the estates, you will firstly focus on translating the mornings session through reading the urban fabric and then looking at the architectural details. The day will finish with a discussion and review of images.

This event is led by photographer Anthony Palmer for students and adults aged 18 and over. It starts at the RIBA before taking to the streets. Online booking in advance is essential. Tickets from £50.
