The Wizard of Oz is an Andrew Lloyd Webber production based on L. Frank Baum's 1900 book, and features the familiar music and songs from the 1939 movie. The musical is performed in two acts. The first act sees Dorothy in her Kansas farm, when a twister comes and whisks her away in her house to the Land of Oz. However, the house lands on the Witch of the East, killing her, which brings joy to the Munchkins of whom the witch was tormenting. The Good Witch of the North, Glinda gives Dorothy ruby slippers and sends her off to search for the wonderful Wizard of Oz, who will hopefully have the power to send Dorothy home. So, Dorothy sets off on her adventure to Oz, picking up traveling friends as she goes along, the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion.But they have a nemesis, the sister of the witch Dorothy accidentally killed when the house landed on her. The second act sees them arrive at Oz, with the Wizard demanding Dorothy obtain the Wicked Witch of the West's broomstick, and so Dorothy sets off on this quest to capture the broomstick in exchange for the chance to return to her own home in Kansas, and to acquire a heart, a brain and courage for her friends. Lloyd Webber's Wizard of Oz plays at The London Palladium, and stars Sophie Evans in the role of Dorothy. Russell Grant plays the Wizard. Paul Keating is Scarecrow, Tin Man is played by Edward Duly, Martin Callaghan is Cowardly Lion, Emily Tierney is the good witch Glinda and Marianne Benedict as the Wicked Witch of the West. Although the story is primarily for children, Wizard of Oz musical appeals to the entire family, with grandparents, parents and children alike all being familiar with the famous Judy Garland version of 1939.The Wizard of Oz performs live at London Palladium in London, Greater London on Sunday, 29 April 2012.
