Bursledon Windmill Houses
Visit this restored 'tower' mill and see and hear the machinery turning. Its wooden machinery, a direct copy of the original, is in full working order. Visitor facilities are provided in the 17th century barn. The granary, rescued from elsewhere in Hampshire, and the pond help create a countryside atmosphere.
Come and sip a cup of hot coffee or chocolate whilst buying flour for bread or pancakes.
A typical visit begins with an 8 minute film showing you around the site and inside the mill.
Take the mill tour with our well informed and experienced staff where you can see the machinery close-up. All visitors are able to visit the ground floor or operations control room, however a height restriction of 1.2m applies to climbing above this floor.
Then try grinding flour by hand in the barn using the ancient saddle quern or the medieval rotary quern. The mill grinds wheat making stone-ground flour as it did in the 19th century. The high quality flour is available for purchase.
NB We cannot guarantee that the sails will always be turning or that wheat is being ground during your visit because this is dependent upon weather conditions and other factors. Please wear sensible footwear.
Windmill Wood Nature Trail
Young woodland habitat next to the windmill supports a wide range of wildlife including woodpeckers. Children may also enjoy watching the insect life in the farm pond.
