The museum contains displays relating to Southampton's history as a trading and passenger port. There is a collection of large model ships, including a model of the Queen Mary. The museum has been gifted or acquired a large number of items relating to the Titanic disaster. One of the first gifts was the Royal Naval Reserve dress sword belonging to Captain Smith of the Titanic, presented by his widow Eleanor on the first anniversary of the disaster.
