Poems by Leo Aylen (Muswell Press, 2012) Written & Performed by Leo Aylen Directed by Pauline Lisowska Produced by Léonie Scott-Matthew
Britain’s top scientist says the human race has only a 50-50 chance of surviving 2100. For forty years our leaders have done nothing. Maybe Planet Earth’s only chance of survival is to eliminate the human race? The Day The Grass Came is a dark satire, glorying in the natural world, pouring contempt on our leaders.
“The visceral intellectualism with which he attacks his subjects is exemplified in The Day the Grass Came which defines an ambitious work — and triumphs. The shorter poems are just as impressive.” Melvyn Bragg
“I’ve just finished reading The Day The Grass Came. I am overwhelmed, thrilled, lit up. Virile, vital, virtuosic. Stupendous. The words demand to be spoken out loud, insist on it; and the underlying connections forging the whole piece into one great organic entity are profound and muscular. The earth moves.” Simon Callow
Leo Aylen has performed his poetry extensively in theatres on three continents, and has appeared in the Royal Albert Hall, Round House, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room, St Paul’s Cathedral, Tricycle, Orange Tree, Soho Poly, in North America from New York to San Francisco, British Columbia to Ontario, and extensively in Africa, including to an audience of 4000 Zulus on an open hillside. He has nine published poetry collections, been published in 100 anthologies, won prizes in Arvon, Peterloo, and Bridport, competitions. He has directed a number of films for television, been nominated for a BAFTA, and co-written a Hollywood movie Gods & Generals (Warner Bros 2003). In the theatre he has appeared with Prunella Scales, Sara Kestelman, Stephanie Cole, Ruth Madoc, in shows he has written, as well as directing his own translation of Sophocles’ Antigone, and written lyrics for musicals & a pantomime. He has created and performed in many radio features, and for several years regularly created poems based on current news stories for BBC Radio 4. He and his poetry have been the sole subject of 3 American nationwide television programmes (CBS).
