Exquisite first editions, beautiful original illustrations - exhibits from a few £s to a few million.
A major three-day event, now in its 59th year, is one of the largest and most prestigious antiquarian book fairs in the world, showcasing rare, unique and unusual items from 180 leading UK and international dealers. Browse and buy from a world-class collection of rare books, maps, prints, manuscripts, and ephemera. Activities include expert-led tours, hands-on book arts demonstrations, and events celebrating the anniversary of Frankenstein and the birth of Gothic literature. From medieval manuscripts to modern signed first editions, visitors can literally hold history in their hands as they view and buy museum-quality books, maps, prints, photographs, manuscripts, ephemera and original artwork. For a taste of what's on offer, browse the highlights online.
This year our theme is 'The Birth of the Gothic: Two Centuries of Frankenstein, Vampires and Byronic Darkness', celebrating the year in which Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and Polydori's The Vampyre were conceived during a ghost-story telling contest proposed by Lord Byron on the shores of Lake Geneva. Many exhibitors are bringing related books, prints, and other items, and there will be Gothic-themed guided tours, spooky snacks in the cafe, and a showing of the spectacularly atmospheric silent movie Nosferatu (1922), courtesy of the BFI, as well as other gothic surprises elsewhere in the hall.
Newcomers and seasoned fair-goers can also enjoy guided tours of the show's treasures. Each tour is run by a professional bookseller, and include introductory sessions on how to start a collection of rare books as well as more tailored explorations of specific topics, including travel, Shakespeare, books adapted for film and the history of London.
And, in addition to our regular exhibitors, LIVE. is a series of events run by leading book art professionals. Here, specialist organisations and craftspeople offer fascinating hands-on family friendly workshops.
This is wonderful way to view, and possibly buy, a real treasure.
