From 1897 to 1962 the Grand Guignol horror theatre of Paris thrilled audiences with gory spectaculars that would give birth to today’s horro
Performed in an over-the-top melodramatic style, Grand Guignol by today’s standards lends itself to comedy, but is also gritty and nightmarish enough to keep audiences squirming in their seats and shielding their eyes.In this workshop we will create larger-than-life characters ranging from the criminally insane (and their victims) to mad doctors who calmly carry out horrific operations in the name of medicine. We will learn to make gory special effects (which we will use excessively-Blood will flow! Heads will roll!) and explore how sound effects can make our frightful reenactments all the more cringe inducing. We will stage macabre scenes from turn-of-the-century horror plays and examine how this stylish (if grotesque) kind of work can compliment modern sketch comedy—push the
limits of what we’re doing onstage way beyond audience expectations and shed light on the simple yet highly fruitful relationship between comedy and suspense.
Shenoah Allen is one half of the world renowned comedy duo, Pajama Men, with whom he has developed more than ten original stage shows. These anarchic, character driven, narrative-sketch comedies have appeared on London’s West End, in Chicago at both Steppenwolf and Second City, St. Anne’s Warehouse in New York, The Sydney Opera House, The Largo in Los Angeles and countless clubs, pubs, theatres and festivals around the globe. He has written commissioned screenplays and television pilots for HBO, BBC, Film4, Paramount and Scott Free. He has collaborated as a writer with Paul King (Director of Mighty Boosh, Paddington) and James Bobin (Director of Flight of the Concords, The Muppets, Through The Looking Glass). Shenoah is a Creative Associate of London’s Soho Theatre.
