Say Hello to English Exhibitions

Tyburn Gallery is pleased to present Say Hello to English, Moffat Takadiwa’s second exhibition at the gallery.

Takadiwa’s practice engages issues of material culture, spirituality, colonialism and identity, as well the environment.

The title Say Hello to English derives from the fact that for many Zimbabweans, and Africans broadly, it has been essential to speak English to gain an education during the British colonisation of the country. This created an English-speaking elite, with indigenous languages and native cultures diminished.

The concept of the exhibition has been inspired by the work of Kenyan writer Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o. In his book ‘Decolonising the mind’, the author highlights the inseparable connection between language and culture, therefore between language and cultural dominance.

The exhibition consists of wall sculptures made from destroyed computer keyboards, through which the artist explores the legacy of this cultural imperialism perpetuated by language. For Takadiwa, language not only carries culture, but also embodies the values by which people perceive their place in the world. Dismantling colonial rule requires not simply the transfer of the instruments of government, but overcoming colonial cultural legacies, including language.

The artist takes inspiration from the “Rhodes Must Fall” movement in questioning the validity of Western oriented education in Africa. In creating the works for Say Hello to English, the artist, with his team of young assistants, destroyed thousands of computer key boards left over from the colonial administration, an action which mimics the tearing down of statues by students demanding the decolonisation of academia. Takadiwa then places the keyboards randomly side by side, thereby fabricating his own ‘decolonised’ meaning or language.

One of the central works of the show, "The Falling of Rhodes(ia)" 2017, recalls the statue of the arch imperialist Cecil John Rhodes which was recently removed from Cape Town University following protests by students. However, Takadiwa’s work is no copy of the statue; instead the computer keyboard pieces are re-assembled to create an entirely novel, mythical creature to replace that of Rhodes.

Moffat Takadiwa graduated from Harare Polytechnic College, Zimbabwe in 2008. Part of the post-independence generation of artists in Zimbabwe, Takadiwa has exhibited extensively across major institutions in Zimbabwe as well as internationally.
Upcoming projects include: Le jour qui vient, curated by Marie-Ann Yemsi, Galerie des Galeries, Galeries Lafayette, Paris (2017); Chinafrika, Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst Leipzig, Germany (2017) touring to Kunstfest Weimar, Germany (2017) and then to Hong Kong, China, Johannesburg, South Africa, and Lagos, Nigeria (all in 2018).
Recent solo exhibitions include Across Borders, WhatiftheWorld, Cape Town, South Africa (2016); Foreign Objects, Tyburn Gallery, London, UK (2015).
Recent group exhibitions include: Collector’s Stage, curated by Enin Supriyanto at Art Stage Singapore, Singapore (2017); When Tomorrow Comes, Wits Art Museum, Johannesburg, South Africa, Michaelis Galleries, Cape Town, South Africa (2016); Broken English, Tyburn Gallery, London, UK (2015); Warp & Woof, The Hole, New York, USA (2014); National Gallery of Zimbabwe Annual Show, Harare, Zimbabwe (2014); Brand New Second Hand, Vigo Gallery, London, UK (2014); Inexactly This, Kunstvlaai Festival of Independents, Amsterdam (2012).
Takadiwa has been a recipient of many awards since 2008, including the Award of Attendance from The Zimbabwe Olympic Committee, Harare, Zimbabwe in 2012 and an Award of Merit and Special Mention Prize for exhibitions at Gallery Delta, Harare, Zimbabwe both in 2010.
