John Wilson's critically acclaimed First World War Drama plays at the SPH this March. This poignant revival - staged in this the centenary year of the Armistice - is directed by James Thacker.
From the mud of the battlefield walked Private Hamp the sole survivor of his unit. Having just heard of the adultery of his beloved wife he instinctively left for home, scarcely being able to comprehend what he is doing, his mind shell shocked. He walks until being picked up for desertion. Hargreaves, a civilian solicitor and serving officer now finds himself defending said deserter at court-martial. Hargreaves must overcome Hamp's total lack of comprehension and blind-faith, hoping to deliver his defendant a verdict that will spare him from the firing squad. A company of unhappy protagonists must wrestle with their consciences in the pursuit of justice. The pragmatism and futility of war is indisputable, cloaking their true feelings with procedure and cynicism they must define what it is to defy King and Country.
John Wilson's critically acclaimed First World War Drama, Hamp, comes to the Stockwell Playhouse this March.
