Her life was in their hands. Now her toe is in the mail.
Twenty years ago on 6th March 1998, The Coen Brothers followed up their success with the Academy Award winning Fargo by releasing a film that most critics hated, which flopped at the box office and divided audiences of the time .“Yeah, well, you know, that’s just, like, your opinion, man.”Twenty years later, The Big Lebowski has since become the very definition of what a cult film is, with a loyal following over the years since its release on 6th March 1998, a day that would later go on to be known by fans of the film as ‘Dude Day,’ but in typical Dude fashion we’re celebrating that fact a week late. Jeff Bridges, who pretty much wore his own wardrobe for the role, plays The Dude (“That or, uh His Dudeness, or uh Duder, or El Duderino, if you’re not into the whole brevity thing”), an amiable and unemployable burnout who gets mixed up in a rambling tale of lies, corruption, mistaken identity and bowling following the urination of a prized rug that really tied the room together. With a memorable ensemble cast of misfit deadbeats and Nihilists, including the terrific John Goodman as Walter, Steve Buscemi as Donny, and Julianne Moore as The Dude’s “lady friend” Maude, The Big Lebowski plays out like a surreal film noir, an occasional acid flashback which happens to be damn funny, with a lotta ins, a lotta outs, and a lotta what-have-yous. Bring your robes, your White Russians and take some comfort in revisiting one of the Coens’ best and most out there films. The Dude Abides...
“Recently someone asked me, “How would you feel at the end of your career if the role you were most famous for was the Dude?” “I’d be fucking delighted,” I told him” Jeff Bridges, 2007
