Peterborough Opera presents a concert performance (in English) of Charles Gounod's Romeo & Juliet, accompanied by piano.
In this production, the leading Montagues, Romeo, Mercutio and Stephano are trouser roles, and sung by women.Gounod is faithful to the characters of the protagonists, with Mercutio and Stephano full of fun, and keen to provoke the hated Capulets. Gertrude, Juliet’s nurse is also a lively character and is teased by the young men from both families. Capulet is a fun loving father, without the tyrannical side which is shown in Shakespeare’s play.
The cast is led by Lyndsey Evans (Romeo), Karen Davies (Juliet), Ami Walsh (Stephano), Marie Hayes (Gertrude), Mike Hammond (Tybalt), Liz Williams (Mercutio), Michael Dale (Capulet) and Martin Muir (Friar Laurence).
Shakespeare's classic tale of love, rivalry, and tragedy will be performed at St Peter's Church in Oundle on Saturday 14th April (7.30pm), and St John the Baptist Church in Cathedral Square, Peterborough on Sunday 15th April (4pm).
