Discovering the Paintings of Jane WalkerApril 8th - April 15th
Opening Night: Friday April 7th, 18:00-21:00
This April Surface Gallery invites you to discover the paintings of internationally acclaimed artist, Jane Walker.
Since leaving the Royal Academy Schools Jane Walker has explored many different aspects of painting. Recently Walker has been concentrating on line only to build up her current images of cities. The character of the lines is different in separate groups of her work. The backgrounds are made up of dense layers of glazes in contrasting colours. The cities tend to be under pressure with the smallest buildings at the bottom. Tension in the lines reflects tension in the urban environment. The energy in the lines varies greatly from one painting to the next. The paintings are made as figurative paintings. The artist has recently discovered that her work can be read as music which is an abstract reading of the same paintings.
Opening Night:
There will be an Artist Talk at 7pm when visitors will be invited to listen to Walker discuss her creative practice.
There will also be improvised interpretations of the artist's work throughout the evening. Antonio Ciavarella will interpret Walker’s paintings, playing piano and integrating electronics into his performance. There will also be improvised interpretations from Phileas Flute, and from D’juil, a collaboration between cellist and bassist, David Dhonau, and composer, percussionist, producer, Julian Broadhurst.
Discovering the Paintings of Jane Walker will open in the Project Space in conjunction with Draw the Line in the Main Gallery. As always, there will be a donations bar, with ales provided by local brewery, Springhead.
Creative Writing Workshop: Saturday 8th March, 12pm to 2pm
Participants will be invited to respond to both Draw the Line and Discovering the Paintings of Jane Walker, to reimagine the visual in the written.
