In association with the Imperial War Museum and as part of a nationwide programme of events commemorating the centenary of WW1
Very few soldier-poets spoke out against the waritself before it ended, although a number of them
did so afterwards. Sassoon’s famous protest awoke
differing responses. Essentially it was love for his men that drove him to issue his angry statement accusing the politicians of deliberately delaying any chance of peace. It was also the reason for his return to the trenches and his repeated insistence on truth and reality. Wilfred Owen’s death came pitifully close to the Armistice, which was greeted with excitement in the streets but not in poetry. Owen’s finest poems were written in Yorkshire between September 1917 and September 1918 when he was posted back to France. He was killed on 4th November 1918. War poetry went out of fashion in the early twenties. Rupert Brooke was long dead. Neither the style nor the ideas made sense any more. Talk by RICHARD FIELD.
