The travelling son of Swansea copper magnate John Henry Vivian, Richard Glynn Vivian (1835-1910) was an avid collector and amassed a fine private display of porcelain and art which he housed at both his London address and at Sketty Hall, Swansea. In later life, however, Richard Glynn Vivian became blind and, unable to fully appreciate the splendour of his collection, he offered it to Swansea Council, along with £10,000,000 for the building of a gallery to house them. The original bequest of Richard Glynn Vivian includes work by old masters as well as an international collection of porcelain and Swansea china. The twentieth century is also well represented with modern paintings and sculpture by Hepworth, Nicholson and Nash alongside Welsh artists such as Ceri Richards, Gwen and Augustus John and Alfred Janes.

The Gallery's outdoor sculpture court offers ramped access to the ground floor, where toilet facilities have been adapted for wheelchair users.
