Alnwick Castle Castles

To many people, their first sight of this glorious medieval castle can seem foreboding, and certainly its history lacks nothing in drama and intrigue. Some of you may recognise us as a film location, for everything from Harry Potter to Elizabeth to Becket to Blackadder.

There is so much to see and do - history, art, landscape, fun for the children, dining, shopping, exploring - and I hope these pages give you a taste of our 'Windsor of the North'. Do enjoy this virtual visit and we hope you can soon join us in person.

Alnwick Castle is the second largest inhabited Castle in England, the first being Windsor Castle, and has been the home of the Percys, Earls and Dukes of Northumberland since 1309. The earliest mention of Alnwick Castle in the history books appears soon after 1096 when Yves de Vescy became baron of Alnwick and erected the earliest parts of the Castle.

We're sure that whatever your age or interests you'll find lots to see and do on any visit here, and all on a scale to match any house in Britain.

First and foremost, Alnwick Castle remains a family home and we welcome families as guests. Like every home, there are sure signs to be found of those that came before us. Sometimes that's the very structure of the building; sometimes the decorative style; sometimes the treasures that they've left; and sometimes just the stories we still like to share. .
