Newby Hall, the family home of Mr & Mrs Richard Compton, is one of England's renowned Adam houses,an exceptional example of 18th century interior decoration, recently restored to its original beauty.

Information for Disabled Visitors

Access - allocated spaces in car park for disabled adjacent to entrance pavilion on natural hard-core surface. Pathways are pea shingle gravel throughout the gardens. One shallow step to the house. Shallow ramped exit from the house. All ground floor rooms accessible in wheelchairs, the ground floor contains the main rooms, e. G. Entrance hall, library, tapestry room and statue gallery.

The superb contents of the house, collected by Weddell, ancestor of the Compton family, include the Gobelins Tapestry Room, a renowned gallery of classical statuary and some of Chippendale's finest furniture.

William Weddell, an ancestor of Mr Compton, was a prominent member of the Dilettanti society and had made the "Grand Tour" in 1765-6. Amongst the treasures he brought back from Europe were magnificent classical sculptures and a superb set of Gobelins Tapestries. In order to house all these treasures, Weddell commissioned the Architect Robert Adam to create the splendid domed Sculpture Gallery and Tapestry Room that we see today. Indeed the entire contents of the Tapestry Room are still in their original condition, which makes the room unique.

Newby's exciting Adventure Garden for Children has been thoughtfully and safely designed for children of all ages - from the paddling pool, sandpit and swings for toddlers through to climbing frames and bridges, an aerial slide and pedalo boats for the older children. And of course, Newby's famous Miniature Railway is for children and adults alike - of all ages!

Each summer Newby displays a completely new selection of contemporary sculpture in the grounds.

An eclectic, thought provoking collection of around 50 sculptures will be on show in bronze, wood, glass, stone and steel by established and up and coming sculptors. All exhibits will be for sale, and many of the sculptors are also available for commissions, prices usually range from £300 to £100,000.

The exhibition, which is kindly sponsored by Christie's, will open on 1st June and close on 2nd October. .
