Rydal Mount and Gardens Houses
Rydal Mount dates from the 16th Century when the house was a small yeoman style cottage. This older part of the house became the Wordsworths Dining Room on the ground floor and Dorothy and Dora Wordsworth's bedrooms on the first floor.
The house has good entertaining space and the Wordsworths threw a great many parties in the Drawing Room . Both the Drawing Room and Library contain many original pieces of furniture, personal effects of the Wordsworths and portraits.
All the Wordsworth family were keen gardeners and William had strong views about how a garden should look. In particular he believed that a garden should be informal and that it should harmonise with the countryside consisting of 'lawn, and trees carefully planted so as not to obscure the view'.
Every owner of Rydal Mount has been a keen gardener, but other than the planting of some late-Victorian plants the garden remains little changed since Wordsworth's day.
Tour includes a guided tour of the historical gardens landscaped by the poet and remaining close to his original design.
Enjoy the views of Lake Windermere and Rydal Water; experience a little of the romantic ambience of this natural garden.
Relax in the poet's library with a glass of chilled white wine & some famous Grasmere gingerbread, soaking up the history of this period of the 'Romantics' as the words of the poet are read.
