Althorp has been home to the Spencer family for nearly 500 years. It became the focus of world attention following the tragic death of Diana, Princess of Wales in September 1997. Like many great country houses, it has benefited from the discriminating and varied collecting of generations of occupants, their marriages and chance provisions. But the Spencers have also had the knack of going to the right people; its collection of portraits is particularly fine, and justly famous. As a record of a family, and as a record of English portraiture, it is outstanding.

The present grounds were designed by the architect W.N. Teulon and date from 1860.

More recently, one of England's most prominent garden designers, Dan Pearson, has taken on the redevelopment of the gardens with the aim of lifting the visitors' eyes to the wider landscape with its magnificent and rare collection of trees.

Tickets are available each day at the Gate House. If you wish to book tickets online, this service will be available later in the year.

The House and Grounds will open from 1st July to 30th September 2005, excluding the 31st August when the House and Grounds will be closed. The gates open at 11am and last admission is at 4pm.
