An astonishing 12% of the British population have a severe phobia of clowns (coulrophobia), according to Alton Towers, who have put together a special event to help sufferers.
More than one in ten Brits have a severe phobia of clowns, according to top theme park Alton Towers.
The research, conducted prior to a special event at Alton Towers Resort on the 12th October, has revealed that 12 percent of the population (7.5 million Brits) have a phobia of clowns. Astonishingly, this is more than the number of people who suffer from a fear of flying (7%), or a fear of snakes (10%).
To address the problem, those with a fear of clowns (coulrophobics) are invited to their Carnival of Screams for a 'mass clown phobia curing event', devised by clinical hypnotherapist David Samson.
The 're-clown-ditioning' treatment will be based on an old travelling funhouse that has been overtaken by evil clowns. If that sounds like your worst nightmare, then this event is for you - the hypnotherapy event is based on the principle of Exposure Therapy, which is used to treat anxiety disorders by exposing the patient to the feared object to confront their fears directly.
Guests will also be able to experience Alton Towers rollercoasters and rides, which will be open until 9pm throughout the Carnival of Screams duration, which runs from the 15-31 October.
Commenting on the mass clown phobia event, Katherine Duckworth, Head of Consumer Marketing at the Alton Towers Resort said: Following feedback from last year's guests and based on our research, we wanted to offer visitors the chance to be cured of their coulrophobia in time to enjoy this year's Scarefest event and our Carnival of Screams attraction, which is set to be even more intense than last year!
Those suffering from coulrophobia are invited to the event by emailing clown@frankpr.it with details of your phobia.
