A project spanning ten years finally opens at the National Museum of Art in Cardiff, exhibiting a full collection of Welsh art.
For the first time a complete range of Wales's art collection can be viewed under one roof at the National Museum of Art in Cardiff. From Tudor portraits to contemporary sculptures, pieces stored away for too long have been resuscitated and put out once more for the public's enjoyment.
One piece in particular has barely been given any time to let the dust settle before going on show - Richard Long's newest work was nothing more than a pile of unwanted chunks of slate just two weeks ago.
The temporary exhibition located in the West Wing, I Cannot Escape This Place, boasts work by infamous artists including Francis Bacon, David Hockney and Rachel Whiteread, as well as up and coming artists such as Welsh artist Manon Awst.
The gallery also has eight Monets and some Renoir, Cezanne and Van Gogh originals on display.
'The country's collection of works by Welsh artists and international names is outstanding and it now has the home it deserves,' Museum director, David Anderson, told the Guardian. 'The National Museum of Art is a new landmark institution for the whole of Wales and is one of the largest art venues outside London.'
Unlliw, by Carwyn Evans, comprises of a staggering 6,500 cardboard bird boxes and will go on show at the museum. Unlliw was created in 2002 in a response to plans to build the same number of real homes in west Wales. The name of the piece is taken from a Welsh proverb Adar o'r Unlliw, Ehedant i'r Unlle and translates as Birds of a Feather, Flock Together.
The National Museum of Art which includes refurbished galleries and six new contemporary art galleries is open to the public as of tomorrow, July 9.
