It must have been destiny that Charley Pride's career in the baseball diamond did not fare well, because had he continued pitching, he would not have been one of world's greatest country musicians.

Pride, who was born on 1938 in Sledge, Mississipi, was one of the children of poor sharecroppers. He was 14 when he got his first guitar and started playing country music. In January 1966, Pride released his first song "The Snakes Crawl at Night" which unfortunately did not make it to the charts. It was released but no publicity pictures of Pride were distributed as some people in the music industry feared that listeners would reject a black performer. His song "Just Between You and Me" which was released at the end of 1966 landed on number nine in the US Country chart and was greeted with critical and commercial success - earning him a Grammy award.Since then, Charley Pride has sold 12 albums in the US which have turned gold and combined with four platinum and thirty gold internationally, he had secured a spot in the Top 15 all-time country music record sellers. In 1993, Pride became the first black regular in the Grand Ole Opry's 70-year run.
