Indie pop band The Wombats formed in Liverpool in 2003, having met at the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts (LIPA). The band released their debut single Girls, Boys, and Marsupials in 2006, and their best selling single was Moving To New York, which reached number 13 in January 2008. The band were chosen for the opening act at the opening ceremony of the European Capital of Culture at the Liverpool Arena in 2008.
