The Food Standards Agency has found that 43 out of 145 samples of takeaways with lamb contain a different meat.

Owners of takeaway restaurants are to face investigations after it was found that almost a third of all lamb takeaways contained meat other than lamb.

Of the samples that were collected, 25 contained only beef, which is often much cheaper than lamb. Turkey and chicken were also found by the inspection conducted by the FSA, although no samples contained horsemeat.

As a result, local authorities will be testing other establishments from the beginning of May.

In addition, consumer company Which? revealed that a higher instance of food contamination was found in Birmingham and London. In Birmingham, more than HALF the samples contained different types of meat.

It follows last year's horse meat scandal, where 17 different beef products were found to contain traces of horsemeat.

Commenting on the findings, Chief Operating Officer for the FSA said, "Prosecutions have taken place against business owners for mislabelling lamb dishes, but the recurring nature of the problem shows there needs to be a renewed effort to tackle this problem. Clearly the message isn't getting through to some businesses."

Takeaway bosses can be fined up to £5,000 for misrepresenting their food.
