Alex Ferguson to retire after 26 years

One of the most successful football managers of all time, Alex Ferguson will be leaving Manchester United at the end of the season. Ferguson who is set to have his hip replaced at the end of the year will be stepping down at the age if 71.



After nearly 27 year in charge of the most successful football club in the world, Sir Alex Ferguson will step down as Man U's manager.

Sir Alex, now aged 71 will step down as the manager of Manchester United at the end of this season and will then become a director and ambassador for the club.

During his reign at Old Trafford the Scot has won 38 trophies, 13 league titles, two championship League titles, five FA Cups and four League Cups.

The rumour, which started yesterday, that Sir Alex was to retire, was confirmed by the club this morning at 9.15am on their website. A statement said that after 26-and-a-half-years the most successful manager in English football will blow the final whistle this summer.

In the statement, Alex Ferguson said:#quote#The decision to retire is one that I have thought a great deal about and one that I have not taken lightly. It is the right time.'#/quote#

He went on to say: 'It was important for me to leave an organisation in the strongest possible shape and I believe I have done so.

'The quality of this league-winning squad, and the balance of ages within it, bodes well for continued success at the highest level whilst the structure of the youth set-up will ensure that the long-term future of the club remains a bright one.'

He told his fans that he leaves the clubs training facilities that are amongst some of the best in the world, with Old Trafford favoured as 'one of the leading venues in the world.'

The Manchester United squad were officially told of the news this morning at training as they prepare to take on Swansea on Sunday. This will be a momentous game as it will be Ferguson's final game and the last time of being in charge of the world renowned team at Old Trafford.
