Bale wins PFA Player & Young Player Awards

Spurs' Welsh international, Gareth Bale, was doubly honoured by his fellow professionals last night, winning both the PFA Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year awards.

The young Welsh tyro becomes only the third man to win both the Player of the Year and Young Player awards in the same season, following in the footsteps of Andy Gray and Christiano Ronaldo.

He is also only the fifth player to win the PFA Player of the Year award twice, joining the illustrious company of Alan Shearer, Mark Hughes, Thierry Henry and, again, Christiano Ronaldo. Bale won the prestigious award two years ago for his performances in the 2010/11 season.

After receiving the award Bale stated 'It's a massive honour. To be voted by your peers is one of the biggest things in the game'.

Bale has a wonderful season for Tottenham, scoring some absolutely fantastic goals, many of which have been from outside the penalty box. His combination of pace, dribbling skills, power and goals saw him finish ahead of Man Utd's Robin van Persie and Liverpool's Luis Suarez, who would have been a controversial choice after his recent 10 match suspension for biting Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic.

Spurs are currently in competition with Chelsea and Arsenal for a top four spot and qualification for next season's Champions League, something the club requires to ensure they are able to retain the services of Bale, for whom the big clubs are Europe will be prepared to break the bank in the Summer.

Bale is joined in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year by Tottenham team mate Jan Vertonghen and both have been pivotal in Spurs' improvement this season.

Also honoured in the Team of the Year are four players from the champions, Man Utd, David de Gea, Rio Ferdinand, Michael Carrick and Robin van Persie, two from the Chelsea midfield, Juan Mata and Eden Hazard, as well as Pablo Zabaleta from Man City, Leighton Baines from Everton and Luis Suarez from Liverpool.

Should Spurs fail to finish in the top four and secure that all-important Champions League place his future at White Hart Lane could be in doubt. He has been the most dominant player in the Premier League this season and with Wales still struggling to qualify for major championships Bale will be wanting to fulfil his ambitions to play at the highest level possible.
