The amazing sight of a double rainbow arcing over the London skyline ended a day of mixed weather in the capital on Saturday.

Whether or not there are two pots of gold out there somewhere remains to be seen but anyone who witnessed or photographed this rare event would probably see it as treasure enough!

The rainbows were thought to stretch between Russell Square and Covent Garden and remained on view for a fair while.

The showery weather with sunny intervals made it perfect conditions for spotting a rainbow around the country but only lucky Londoners have reported catching a glimpse of such a complete double arc. A rainbow is an optical and meteorological phenomenon that causes a spectrum of light to appear in the sky when the sun shines on to droplets of moisture in the Earth's atmosphere.

Many sighting of double arcs around the country are usually only partial and particularly feint. This example couldn't be more perfect...and what a picture!
