Former BBC DJ and Jim'll Fix It star, Jimmy Savile, died on Saturday at the age of 84 just two days short of his 85th Birthday.

The former Top Of The Pops presenter and marathon runner Jimmy is said to have died peacefully during the night at his home in Roundhay in Leeds following a recent bout of illness.

Police said they were called to his house but there was nothing suspicious about his death.

Sir Jimmy was famous for presenting his Saturday evening show Jim'll Fix It which, during the height of the show received more than 20,000 weekly letters from Children and the public.

Jimmy Savile OBE was Knighted for his services to charity, and worked 'tirelessly' to raise funds for money said fellow DJ David Hamilton.

BBC Radio colleague Dave Lee Travis, paid tribute to Sir Jimmy saying 'For some unknown reason, with Jim, you couldn't anticipate that he wasn't going to be around anymore - he was such a powerful presence.'

Sir Alan Sugar commented saying, 'Sad news on the death of Jimmy Savile very funny man and did loads of work for charity RIP.'

Jimmy Savile was born, one of seven children, in Leeds in 1926 on Halloween, but almost died of pneumonia when he was just five years old.

His first job was as a miner and again nearly lost his life during an underground explosion which damaged his back and spine, he was told by doctors that it would be unlikely that he would be able to walk again.

He proved the doctors wrong and three years later he was walking unaided and in 1951 he took part in the Tour of Britain cycle race and later became a professional wrestler.

Jimmy Savile was seen most years taking part in the London marathon and ran more than 200 marathons for charity.

Sir Jimmy raised more than £20million to help set up the National Spinal Injuries Centre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Ayelsbury, which was badly damaged in 1983 during a storm.

A spokeswoman from the Hospital said the patients and staff will miss Sir Jimmy saying 'He was tireless in his attempts to fundraise for the hospital and was integral in the creation of the National Spinal Injuries Centre that we have today.'
