Man Utd win 20th league title

Manchester United secured their 20th top flight league title and their 13th Premier League trophy last night beating Aston Villa 3-0 at OLd Trafford, all the goals coming from striker Robin van Persie.

Utd's hero was Dutch striker Robin van Persie who scored all three goals against Villa, the second a sublime volley, regaining the Premier League title for the Red Devils.

Utd were able to bring back the Premier League trophy to OLd Trafford thanks to Man City losing 3-1 to Spurs on Sunday.

The championship is Utd's 20th top flight title and 13th Premier League title, all of which have been won under the stewardship of manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Although Utd failed to make the Champions League quarter-finals this season it was always the Premier League that was Fergie's priority, after the title was won by cross-town rivals Man City last season.

Utd led the title race last season by eight points at one point only to see City hunt them down and win the league on the final day of the season. There was no way that Utd were going to let that happen this season.

Whilst Utd have rarely hit the heights this season they have been awesomely consistent, winning when playing moderately well. The signing of van Persie from Arsenal in the Summer proved a master stroke as the Dutch marksman leads the league with 24 goals.

Wayne Rooney, former darling of the Stretford End, has been less influential but in the first half last night Villa afforded him far too much space and he made them pay pulling the strings in midfield and providing the pass for RVP's wonderful second goal.

After the game Fergie lauded his squad, describing it as probably the best overall group of players he has ever had. He had special words for van Persie's contributions and for veteran Ryan Giggs who he described as a 'unique freak'.

There's no doubt that, even whilst they enjoy the euphoria of a successful season, Ferguson will be plotting a renewed assault on the Champions League for next season.

Similarly certain is the fact that Utd's runaway success in the premier League will stir reactions at the Etihad and Stamford Bridge, where reinforcements will be introduced come the Summer.
