Michael Winner dies aged 77

Film Director and critic, Michael Winner has died today at the age of 77. Mr Winner has been ill for sometime and died at his home in Kensington, London where he was being looked after by his wife Geraldine.



Movie- maker and director of the critically acclaimed film Death Wish, Michael Winner, has died at his home in Kensington, London today aged 77.

The director turned restaurant critic who has been ill for sometime was being nursed by his wife of just two years, Geraldine.

Famed for his 'calm down dear' television catchphrase, the director was given between 18 months and two years by Doctors who were treating him for liver problems.

Just a few months ago, Michael Winner announced that he was looking into using the assisted-dying institution Dignitas.

He lightheartedly said that he was put off with the paperwork, saying:#quote# I checked Dignitas on the computer and you need o go through so much. It's not a walk-in death. Adding: You don't just go in and say, 'Here I am, do your worst.#/quote#

Mr Winner was an avid supporter of the police, and in 1984 following the shooting of Yvonne Fletcher he founded the Police Memorial Trust.

The National Police Memorial sits in central London and commemorates about 4,000 British police officers killed in the course of their duties. On speaking about the National Police Memorial, for which Winner donated £500,000 of his own money, he stated: #quote#Memorials to soldiers, sailors and airmen are commonplace, but the police fight a war with no beginning and no end'#/quote#.

Mr Winner who made more than 30 films, married his wife Geraldine two years ago. Mrs Winner, a former dancer paid tribute to her husband in a statement saying:' Michael was a wonderful man, brilliant, funny and generous.

'A light has gone out in my life.'
