New Spider-Man of mixed race

Marvel Comics have revealed their new half-black, half-Latino Spider-Man who will replace Peter Parker.

Miles Morales is a nerdy teenager from New York City and a refreshing change from Peter Parker who died in Ultimate Spider-Man Issue 160 in June when his mortal enemy Green Goblin finally got him.

Morales, like Parker, is a geeky teenager from a working-class background. He lives with his black and Latino parents in Brooklyn, where as Parker was caucasian and raised by his aunt and uncle in a predominantly white area in Queens.

Marvel editor-in-chief Axel Alonso said Morales 'speaks to our rich cultural heritage' in the United States. Alonso, of English and Mexican descent, admitted he cried when Obama was elected president 'largely because of the fact that he was mixed race'.

Alonso believes Morales will 'resonate emotionally with all sorts of new readers'.
