As the group stages of the Euro 2012 championships take shape and several clubs at home make important player and managerial moves its time to round up the important football stories of the moment.

Here's a quick look at the big football stories of the moment both at the Euro 2012 championships in Poland-Ukraine and with the domestic scene: -

England manager Roy Hodgson looks certain to pick Liverpool striker Andy Carroll for tonight's vital game in Kiev against Sweden, who lost to two Shevchenko headed goals in their first game. The Swedes are vulnerable in the air and Carroll, at 6'3', is a fine header of the ball. It is ecpected that Carroll will partner Danny Wellbeck up front in the absence of the still suspended Wayne Rooney.

Ireland are the first team to be eliminated from the Euro 2012 championships after losing 4-0 to a dominant Spain last night. Chelsea's Fernando Torres rediscovered his scoring form finding the net twice and Spain were in regal form, their other goals coming from Cesc Fabregas and Man City's david Silva.

The other big favourites for the tournament, Germany, also impressed in their last outing, against Holland, where they won 2-1. The Germans are always a strong tournament team and their young, dynamic squad will be hard to beat. The Dutch, who many favoured pre-tournament, look as if they'll be hitting the beaches next week as they need other results to go their way if they are to make the quarter finals after losing both opening games.

Spurs are seeking a new manager and Harry Redknapp is looking for a new job as the two parted ways this week. Outisde of football's inner circle the move came as a shock but according to those in the know, this was on the cards for some time. Its been a dramatic fall from grace for Redknapp who, only a couple of months ago, was considered a shoo-in for the England job. The appointment of Hodgson and Spurs' failure to qualify for the Champions League were bad enough but this latest set-back must have been massively upsetting for one of football's good guys.

One of Redknapp's potential successor's, Roberto Martinez of Wigan, has not been approached for the Spurs job according to his chairman Dave Whelan although he has confirmed that Martinez would be allowed to speak to Spurs if they came calling. Other possibilities for the vacant manager's seat at White Hart Lane include Everton's David Moyes and former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez.

It was no surprise when Roberto di Matteo was confirmed as Chelsea's new permanent manager following the club's fantastic response to him replacing the sacked Andre Villas Boas. Under the charasmatic Italian the Blues won the FA Cup and, of course, they won their first Champions League trophy, the holy grail for owner Roman Abramovich.

Staying with managerial changes it seems like Swansea are on the verge of appointing former Denmark great Michael Laudrup as their new manager. Laudrup has managed in Demark and Spain and has professed his desire to do so in the Premier League. It is thought his appointment would maintain the legacy of stylish, attacking football at the Liberty Stadium, adopted by Brendan Rogers who moved to Liverpool last month.

Arsenal have announced the signing of French international striker Olivier Giroud from Montpelier for a fee of £12m. Giroud, who is with the French Euro 2012 squad, scored 21 times for his club last season and Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, has stated his desire to play the Frenchman in a front three alongside Robin van Persie and Lukas Podolski, another new signing.
